NBC senses a Mitt Wave - approaching '12

From Daily Kos:
Hardly a big news story, but one that bothers me. I happened to catch some of the TODAY show on NBC this morning, and one of the items that came up was Matt Lauer interviewing Mitt Romney live in Boston. The object of the interview was to get Romney's opinion on A) Obama's trip to the Middle East, B) Sotomayor, C) the GM Bankruptcy, and D) his plans for the future.

My question is why? Romney does not currently hold office, has not announced a run for the Presidency yet, is not an expert on foreign affairs or the middle east, and so on. Somebody had to book him - so why didn't they bother to find someone who actually knows something about Middle East politics for example so that we might actually end up knowing more than we did before Lauer spent five minutes schmoozing an old 'friend'?

...All I can figure to explain this is that somewhere inside the decaying fetid decision-making process at NBC, someone figured they had to do something to provide 'balance' for this. Maybe they're placingsome long-term bets. Romney is about the only one in the GOP at the moment who could compete with Obama when it comes to looking presidential on camera, at least from a central casting viewpoint. If they're going to script the 2012 race, Romney might look like their best choice at this point.
